Athena DeCosta grimaced as her emerald eyes alighted on what had once been her t-shirt. It was now a softly smoking pile of threads, thanks to the teenager having lost her temper, and thusly control of her powers. And with her powers, one never knew what would happen if she lost control of them - usually something exploded, or a forcefeild popped up around the dark haired young woman. Occasionally she would glow black, with orange eyes and aura, and be able to throw fire, but that was probably something from her dad, who had had that as his mutation. It obviously wasn't her own.
Wrinkling her sloped nose, the usually messy female picked up the smoking t-shirt, and dropped the offending peice of clothing into the wastebasket in her room, and decided to head downstairs - mostly to get away from the smell of burnt cotton than to spend time with the other people who lived at Xaviers'. Athena wasn't really a social butterfly, but neither was she a complete recluse - no, she just enjoyed her personal space, and the occasional five minutes of solitude that even a teacher would be lucky to get at the mutant boarding school.
Dressed as she was in a pair of dark blue blue jeans and a red t-shirt underneath her favorite blue jean jacket, the nose, eye and lip-peirced seventeen year old got a little more distance than most of her peers. Whether that was because of her looking like any other punk off the streets or because most of them knew well enough that she was the kid of a Howlett and DeCosta (both families infamous for their tempers), she neither knew nor cared.
All Athena wanted right then was a bagel and an air freshener.

Peter was blundering around the Institute, bored out of his mind with nothing to do. He had graduated from the actual school portion of the Institute a year or two ago, and so he had no classes to attend. He didn't feel like going off campus, he didn't like facing the everyday pedestrians of New York. Some of them could be downright rude.
He was wearing a simple grey t-shirt and baggy blue carpenter jeans. Later on he was supposed to help Scott fix some stuff up around the mansion, and the carpenter jeans would come in handy. For now, however, he would have to find something to do, or die of boredom.
Peter started slightly as he rounded a corner and saw Athena there. He had been lost in his thoughts, not expecting to find someone else in this labyrinth of a house. Who was she again...? With all the mutants coming in and out of this place, it was sometimes hard to keep track.

Athena jumped slightly as she heard Peter stumble in. Turning, the teenager noticed that the large guy looked about as suprised to see someone in the kitchen as she was; that is to say, neither of them had thought anything about someone else being in there. Aware she smelled of burnt things, the dark eyed teenager only smiled and hoped he didn't smell her and think she had been smoking again; that was a bad habit she had started getting into.
"Um. Hi.", she said, eyes roving the built Russian's body. He looked good, but wasn't really her type.

"Hello." Peter managed finally, getting over his initial shock. Why had he wandered to the kitchen again...? He figured he'd never know. "Are you new here?" He had gotten into some serious trouble with that question before... sometimes he accidentally asked it to kids who had been here for months, and he had just forgotten. Oh well, it's not like the kids could do anything to him anyways, even though they swore they were the toughest mutants around.

Athena felt herself blushing a little; she hated being singled out, even if it was as the new kid. Which, well, the peirced teenager was. Running a hand absent-mindedly through her short, spikey hair, the mutantess nodded. "Yeah. I just got here a few days ago. What about you?", she asked. He looked familiar, though from where she couldn't quite place. Maybe he was a teacher? Well, that might make sense; but she hadn't been going to enough classes to be able to remember any of her teachers' names.
Fingers tapping restlessly on the dark blue denim of her jeans, Athena grabbed an apple that had been sitting in a fruit bowl, and began tossing it back and forth between her two hands.

Peter relaxed visibly, his shoulders dropping. Well, at least he had been right this time. "I am not new." He said, finally shaking himself out of his mental reverie. No one here talked to him much, and when they did it was often just on Danger Room missions, all serious talk, no fun. He hadn't had a decent conversation in a while. "I have been here for a while... One or two years, I can't remember." He said, shrugging. He didn't bother to count.

Athena raised her eyebrows; well! That was way longer than she would have wanted to stay, but...well, to each his own. And, she mused, Xaviers' wasn't such a bad place. It would have been better, in her opinion, if there had been less rules, but it was still a good place to hang low and regroup. And, you know, actually learn something; moving around once or twice a year had left some rather large gaps in the mutantesses' education.
"That's a long time.", she said, then did what she usually did - talked without thinking. "What's your power, then? Killing touch or something?"

Peter shifted slightly, nervously. "No, nothing like that..." He didn't know what he'd do if he had a power like that. He'd probably have Xavier put him in a coma or something. He wouldn't be able to handle it. He frowned faintly, about to speak again, but deciding against it. It was easier to show his power than explain it, like most mutants. So he powered up right there, gaining another foot to his already substantial height. His whole body turned metal, through and through, reflecting the dim light of the kitchen all around. "This is it." He shrugged, not sure what she would make of it.

Athena felt a grin spread across her face, mixing oddly with the intial jaw-drop that she had experienced when Peter had transformed. The guy in front of her was a giant; he was huge and, she guessed, covered in something close to steel. Maybe...what was that stuff called?...Adamantium! That was it. Her eyes lit up at the thought; oh, what sort of things she could do if she had that power! Of course, it wouldn't be half-bad to be a foot or so taller, either.
"Damn.", she whistled appreciatively. "Man, I bet you could break through almost anything.", Athena grinned. Then she wilted a little, remembering her own useless, erradic powers. Ug.

Rick sneezed at the smell. Something burnt...cotton? He wasn't sure, but he was sure the fire was put out. His doggy instinct and unnatural curiosity made him follow the faint scent to the first floor. There stood a girl and that tall Russian. What was his name? Peter or something, Rick wasn't good with names. Peter's sudden transformation startled him a little, and he whimpered like a little dog.

"Pretty much." Peter said sheepishly, powering back down. He was still tall and pretty strong without his mutant powers, but no where near as competent as he was with them. This girl was nice enough, he mused. A lot more genial than most of the younger kids here. His head tilted to the side slightly as he watched her again. "What are you powers...?" He might as well ask. She had done so first, it was only natural, he supposed.

"I can...um..." Athena started to answer, and then trailed off. Another kid - a boy, looking about her age, she supposed, though he hadn't been human long enough for her to decide - had just walked into the kitchen. And then, like it was something completely normal had changed into a dog. Thus rendering the DeCosta child very confused, slightly alarmed, and feeling very lacking in the power department. The two people she had met so far both had interesting and useful powers; one turned into a metal giant, the other into a floppy-eared dog.
"Is - is that normal? I mean, is he okay?", she stage-whispered to Peter, not taking her dark eyes off of the lupine Rick.

"You know I can hear you right? Doggy smell, doggy hearing and all that." Rick muffled. "Want to pet me? You are very welcome."

"Yes... It is normal." Peter answered Athena in a regular tone. He had seen this kid around a few times. His name started with an 'L' or an 'R', but he couldn't remember which. "Well," He laughed faintly, realizing what he had said. "As normal as a mutant can be, I guess." He said, his deep voice echoing slightly in the big kitchen.

Athena blinked. A month or two ago, if she had seen a boy turn into a dog and then hear said boy-turned-dog talk, she probably would have ran. Or at the very least freaked out. Slightly proud of herself - though still a bit suprised - the spikey-haired mutantess shook her head and stiffened her body somewhat, though that wasn't consiously done.
"No, I'm...um, I'm good, thanks.", Athena managed to say, with something of a suprised smile. Maybe it was because of Peters' laughter. She shot him a smile.
